peculiarities when designing a learning app for target language numbers (1-100)

  1. Definitely needs bespoke systems per language, note e.g. how French numbers are composed
  2. Interference is running wild here, e.g. the word for "63" may interfere with the words for "36", "60", "3", "6", and more
  3. Relations between learning items (=numbers) are semi-formalizable, e.g. an English learner who knows "twenty" and "one" will likely not have too much trouble with "twenty-one"; but the same can not be said for 10, 2 and 12.
  4. You really need to teach specific idiomatic usage such as:
    1. German speakers dictating 2 as "zwo" instead of "zwei"
    2. Egyptians using "zero" instead of "sifr" for 0, but only in phone numbers
    3. How to indicate a decimal point
      1. More generally, how to use numbers to express monetary value, times of day, etc., which may as well be a separate learning app
    4. How numbers are grouped or rounded, such as in "a dozen"
